Remembering those who sacrificed their lives for eternity.
Former president of the Labourers International Union of North America (LIUNA), Local 506, Toppan immigrated to Canada from Northern Italy in 1955. He, like many others, worked to better themselves and to offer opportunities to their loved ones, taking on jobs in hazardous job sectors such as, mining, the hydro projects, the canals, railway and construction. He personally knew many Italians who perished in the line of work.
Toppan and the others behind the project are working to ensure these sacrifices made by workers of Italian heritage will never be forgotten for generations to come.
On April 28, 2016, the project's 11 column monument saw its unveiling at the Columbus Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Each column represents a decade beginning in 1900. The names of each documented fatality from a particular decade is etched on the columns.
