Presenting Our Very Own ... Lucia Catania

This month, Emery Village Business Improvement Area ("BIA") awarded our very own, Lucia Catania, president for the GAA, the Emery Arts Award 2017.

Emery Village is named for the historic settlement, which developed near what is now Finch Avenue West and Weston Road. The village has a rich history of hard working immigrants and a steadfast entrepreneurial spirit, which is woven into the social fabric of the community even today.

The Emery Village BIA was formed in 2003 and is Canada’s largest Business Improvement Area with over 3,200 commercial, industrial and retail establishments employing approximately 25,000 people. It is also one of the City of Toronto’s largest designated Employment Zones.

In awarding Lucia the Emery Arts Award, Emery Village BIA stated that "the intention was to shine the spotlight on artists who make a significant impact on their local community and beyond; artists who use their mediums as tools to engage with multiculturalism, community, and what it means to be Canadian".

Emery Village BIA noted how, "the walls of Lucia Catania’s home are lined with brilliant oil-on-canvas paintings; they tell the story of a first-generation newcomer to Canada. They are visions of her place of birth, places she painted as a young woman, interspersed with Canadian inspired landscapes".

Lucia has received recognition for her work with awards such as Best in Show and Honourable mention. She received the Gold Medal for Female Artist by the Federazione Abruzzese, the Jubilee Medal, York West Centennial Citation, and the Premio Speciale al Corto Metraggio award at the Palena Film Festival Abruzzi.

Apart from being the president of the GAA, she is the Director of the National Canadian Italian Congress, and Director of the Federazione Abruzzese. She participated at the Canadian National Exhibition representing the Congress of Italian Canadians with the Arts, and together with local community member Lee Jackson, has established Lucy Lee, a local arts group for seniors.

It is with great pride that we congratulate our Lucia Catania for her receipt of the very honourable 2017 Emery Arts Award.
