Congratulations Flavio from all of us at the Golden Age Academy!
From painting to drawing, basket weaving, woodwork, sculpting and more ... the GAA's got inspiration!
This Spring marks the Golden Age Academy's 21st Anniversary ... and we're still growing strong! Founded by Joe Carraro, from its inception, the GAA's main focus was to bring together people who finally had an opportunity to do what they always dreamed about but never could as they were too busy making a living and taking care of their families. The members of the GAA spent most of their lives as tailors, bricklayers, concrete workers, homemakers, or something else, but not artists. Now, in their "golden years" they can finally delve into the world of full-time art making and truly relish in their passion! In this our 21st year, we would like to pay homage to all GAA members, from the first six who started it all to the current members who seek to carry on its legacy into the future. Today, in its new formation, the GAA not only encourages retired individuals to join, but all artists who seek to share their love of art with like-minded individuals.
The GAA invites people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to join and share in their experiences and values in the creation and displaying of art.
From 2005 and to date, the art of its members is displayed all year-round in the lobby of the famous Columbus Centre, in Toronto. GAA members also hold several exhibitions annually across the Greater Toronto Area, and promote, participate, and organize access to other Arts and Crafts shows in Toronto and across Ontario.
Congratualtions GAA members for never stopping!

Presenting Our Very Own ... Lucia Catania
This month, Emery Village Business Improvement Area ("BIA") awarded our very own, Lucia Catania, president for the GAA, the Emery Arts Award 2017.
Emery Village is named for the historic settlement, which developed near what is now Finch Avenue West and Weston Road. The village has a rich history of hard working immigrants and a steadfast entrepreneurial spirit, which is woven into the social fabric of the community even today.
The Emery Village BIA was formed in 2003 and is Canada’s largest Business Improvement Area with over 3,200 commercial, industrial and retail establishments employing approximately 25,000 people. It is also one of the City of Toronto’s largest designated Employment Zones.
In awarding Lucia the Emery Arts Award, Emery Village BIA stated that "the intention was to shine the spotlight on artists who make a significant impact on their local community and beyond; artists who use their mediums as tools to engage with multiculturalism, community, and what it means to be Canadian".
Emery Village BIA noted how, "the walls of Lucia Catania’s home are lined with brilliant oil-on-canvas paintings; they tell the story of a first-generation newcomer to Canada. They are visions of her place of birth, places she painted as a young woman, interspersed with Canadian inspired landscapes".
Lucia has received recognition for her work with awards such as Best in Show and Honourable mention. She received the Gold Medal for Female Artist by the Federazione Abruzzese, the Jubilee Medal, York West Centennial Citation, and the Premio Speciale al Corto Metraggio award at the Palena Film Festival Abruzzi.
Apart from being the president of the GAA, she is the Director of the National Canadian Italian Congress, and Director of the Federazione Abruzzese. She participated at the Canadian National Exhibition representing the Congress of Italian Canadians with the Arts, and together with local community member Lee Jackson, has established Lucy Lee, a local arts group for seniors.
It is with great pride that we congratulate our Lucia Catania for her receipt of the very honourable 2017 Emery Arts Award.
Senior Division Winner Makes a Statement ...
GAA Member Lucia Paterra wrote an essay expressing her gratitude for the land she proudly loves ~ Canada. In her email to Honourable MP Judy Sgro, Lucia spoke from her heart, expressing a deep admiration for a land that embraced her like "a father with strong arms". She held nothing back as she told a story that brings tears to the reader's eyes ... a story about success, triumph, victory and passion. From her own experiences to those of her offspring and their offspring, Lucia continues to watch the gifts of this wonderful country trickle down into her family tree.
This email ~ a simple story from the bottom of her heart ~ led to a win for Lucia. Coming in as the Senior Division Winner for this honourable task, Lucia's story is published for all to read.
Congratulations Lucia, from all of us at the GAA!

Discover yourself through art
This month's edition of Panoram Italia Magazine, features an in-depth and personal article about the passionate and accomplished painter and artist Lucia Paterra Catania, President of the Golden Age Academy.
In the article, as in the above interview, Paterra talks about her inspiration behind her art creations and her personal evolution as an artist over the years. She explains how her journey as an artist began more prominently 16 years ago when she was forced to face the difficult reality of a divorce. For Paterra, making art "was a healing process" and helped her to "let go and live in the moment" and "embrace what life sends your way". Inspired by the works of the Group of Seven, Canadian wildlife artist Kelly McNeil, early 20th Century Canadian artist John Currin and the writings of Virginia Woolf, Paterra spends much of her days exploring the artist in her and filling the walls of her modest home with her creations.
The themes and subjects for her paintings include: gender issues, women's experiences, religion and spirituality, family, animals and Canadian and Italian landscapes. There is no stopping this inspirational and innovative Ital-Canadian artist. To see her paintings, visit the GAA's next art exhibit and get to know Paterra a brushstroke at a time!
The Golden Age Academy is proud to celebrate Paterra's accomplishments and shares their love for her with you.
